Who Are You When the Roles Get Stripped Away?

“You were engineered with intention, designed for a specific purpose”

This is a question most of us never think to ask, until life forces us to.

Layoffs. Motherhood. Loss. Divorce. The transitions we did not plan for and could not prepare for. The seasons that arrive without an invitation and leave us standing in the wreckage of everything we thought we knew about ourselves.

I have watched this happen in my coaching practice again and again. A woman who defined herself by her title walks into a layoff and suddenly does not recognize the person looking back at her in the mirror. Not just depleted. Not just financially shaken. Existentially disoriented. Because when you remove the thing you have been calling yourself, who is left?

I know this disorientation personally. I experienced my own identity crisis after the loss of my baby. Grief has a way of stripping everything unnecessary and leaving only what is real. And what I found in that season, in the stillness that grief requires, was that I had been measuring my worth on everyone else's measuring stick. Evaluating my value through titles, roles, and external validation that could be taken from me at any moment.

And then it was. And I had to find out who I was without it.

Many women arrive at this same question after childbirth, knowing they are not the same person they were before, trying to find themselves in a new season they did not have a map for. Add grief on top of that and you have what I can only describe as a complete unraveling. A full identity crisis.

But here is what I know now that I did not know then.

That unraveling was not the end. It was the beginning.

My faith grounded me in what I could not find in the titles or the roles. And it gave me a framework I return to often.

Think about how a car is engineered. The manufacturer designs it with a specific performance in mind, specific parts, specific mechanics, specific fuel requirements. My car requires premium gas. I could put regular in the tank and it would still run. But over time, it would stop performing the way it was built to perform. The design was not honored. And the performance suffers.

Now think about plants, for all my plant moms out there. Annuals and perennials. Shade plants and full sun plants. Partial sun plants that will burn if you place them in direct light. You have to understand the specific design of the plant to know what conditions it needs to thrive. Put it in the wrong environment and it struggles. Put it in the right one and it flourishes.

Our Creator works the same way.

You were not made by accident. You were engineered with intention, designed for a specific purpose, with specific gifts, specific needs, and a specific environment where you are meant to flourish. When you are grounded in what God designed you for, you begin to choose the tools and the fuel that align with your designated purpose. You stop putting regular in a premium tank. You stop placing yourself in environments designed for someone else's growth.

So who am I beneath the roles?

I am a healer. I am a creator. I am love. I am light.

Those things were true before the titles. They were true when the titles were gone. And they will be true long after any role I currently carry has run its season.

That is identity. Not what you do, but who you are.

And because I know who I am, I know what I need. I have to place myself in environments where I thrive. I have to give myself the right care to function at the level I was designed for. I have to use premium fuel, because I am over forty and this body is a luxury vehicle and I intend to treat her accordingly. 🙂

Identity is not just a personal development exercise. It is your blueprint. Your user manual. The foundation from which everything else should flow, your decisions, your boundaries, your relationships, your work, your rest.

When you know who you are, you stop letting the world decide for you.

That is the work. And it starts by getting quiet enough to ask the question.

Who are you when everything else gets stripped away?
